Welcome to World Day of Prayer 2018. It is great to have you all here. Our theme this year as we have seen is “All God’s Creation is Very Good!”
Today I want to share a few thoughts on Creation. I will touch on Genesis chapter 1 that Larissa read earlier, and I will also touch on two other short passages. It is my hope and prayer that you will be blessed and encouraged.
1. God created the heavens and the earth
Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
This simple verse answered many of the questions I had before becoming a Christian at the age of 22. Before this I didn’t know how we got here, who made the world or if it was all by chance. But these 10 words changed everything for me. God made this world.
In the beginning, God created everything from chaos. But everything that was created found its place in creation. All were related to each other – the earth with the light, the waters with the sky, the tree seeds with the living creatures, and the humankind with God. None could exist without the other, and the source of all was God. We all need other and we all need God.
2. God created you and me
Genesis 1:26-27 – Then God said, “Let Us make human beings in Our image, to be like Us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God, He created them; male and female He created them.
In these three short verses we learn a number of very important truths. God made us. Not only did He make us, but He made us in His image. This means God’s DNA is stamped upon us. We think, can reason, make choices and love. We are logical cognitive beings. God is creative in the way He works and created this world. When we create and work and use our gifts in the world around us we reflect God’s image. God is loving. When we love God and relate to each other in loving ways we reflect God outwards to the world around us.
In verse 31 of today’s text it says, “Then God looked over all He had made, and He saw that it was very good!” God declared His creation very good. That includes you and me.
3. God created you a masterpiece with a purpose
Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.
Not only did God create us in His image and declare us very good. In Ephesians 2:10 it tells us two great truths. You are God’s masterpiece. God didn’t just slap you together quickly. You are His masterpiece. Like the world considers the Statue of David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel a masterpiece, God considers you a masterpiece that He knit together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 119:13).
The second great truth is that God made you with a purpose. Ephesians 2:10 says God made you a masterpiece, He created you anew in Christ Jesus, and He has a wonderful purpose He planned for you long ago. Imagine God having you on His mind before the foundation of the world. You are not here by chance. You are here with a good purpose to make an amazing difference in this world. Each one of us here is called, gifted and sent out to make a difference. You are good, and your purpose is good. Because both were created by God.
4. God created a place for you in His eternal family
John 1:12-13 – But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn–not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
God loved you so much that He could not stand to spend eternity without you. He wanted you to be a part of His eternal family. It was His plan all along. We have all heard that wonderful verse from John 3:16. It says, “For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” Verse 17 goes on to say, “God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him”.
God moved heaven and earth for you. Jesus came for you. He left the glories of heaven for you. Jesus loves you more than His own life. And because of our faith and trust in Jesus and what He has done for us on the cross, we can know with certainty that we are God children and part of His eternal family. No matter who we are, our age, our background, or the church we go to, we are brothers and sisters because of our faith in Christ. That is very good – it is good news!
So today as we continue with our service and continue with our theme of “All God’s Creation is Very Good”. I want to encourage you with these four ideas I have shared today.
- God created the heavens and the earth – it was very good.
- God created you and me – and we are very good.
- God created you a masterpiece with a purpose – this is very good.
- God created a place in His eternal family – this is very good.
