Here is my message I shared for communion today. The theme was “The message of the cross”.
The Message of the Cross
For communion today I want to look at a verse from Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 1:18 says, “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God”.
I understand this statement now. But, before I came to Christ I didn’t believe in the cross and I didn’t think it had any power for salvation. I was like one of the people who scoffed at Noah as he built his ark. They didn’t believe that the ark could save them…until the rain came.
Now I do believe in the power of the cross of Christ. I came to a point of faith in Christ. In this process, four main passages spoke to me.
1. I believed that Jesus was the only way to find salvation
Acts 4:12 – There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
2. I believed that even though I was a sinner Christ died for me
Romans 5:8 – But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
3. I believed that I was not good enough to make it to heaven on my own
Ephesians 2:8-9 – God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
4. I believed I needed to have Jesus as my Lord and Saviour
Romans 10:9-10 – If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
The message of the cross has great power. It has the power to take you and I from an eternity without God, to eternity with God.
So, as we take the bread and the cup today, let us remember the power of the cross of Christ. It is the very power of God for salvation. Let us pray.
